Groundhog Day / Guthrie Lonergan (2009)
Originally commissioned for the festival in 2009, in Groundhog Day Lonergan works his way through each day of the film, giving a slideshow commentary that is not quite from the point of view of its lead character Bill Murray. Riffing on the popular film using its own narrative device, it becomes a bootleg cover version that underlines the film’s ubiquity in popular consciousness – ‘groundhog day’ being a stand-in term for repetition in common conversation. The dry-humored, hypnotic piece highlights the banal in the blog genre.
