The work reveals the hidden infrastructures and social architecture of cinematic space, bringing projection, sound, light and audiences into a shared field of perception.

Drawing on the artists’ ongoing investigations into expanded cinema and sound system culture, Intra Protocol treats the cinema not simply as a place to watch moving images, but as an active environment that shapes how we gather, communicate and experience one another. The work explores protocol as both material and method, making perceptible the hidden infrastructures that organise collective experience while inviting audiences to reconfigure them through movement, attention and play.

Across an evolving composition of light, sound and embodied space, expectations of the cinema begin to shift. The auditorium becomes a responsive environment where technological and human signals coexist, overlap and influence one another, allowing the cinema itself to become the primary performer.

Reconfigured specifically for AND Festival 2026, Intra Protocol brings together ideas developed through Golding and Spendlove’s ongoing artistic enquiry, including Decompression and Commune.sys, in a new site-responsive iteration created for the festival.

Intra Protocol by Sally Golding and Matt Spendlove, developed for AND Festival 2026, building on Intra Protocol, originally created for the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in partnership with Liquid Architecture, and Decompression, premiered at Tyneside Cinema as part of the Projections artists’ moving image series. Presented with support from Barnsley Council and Parkway Cinema.

What to expect

Intra Protocol is a durational work that is free to attend but booking is encouraged to guarantee entry. You can re-enter the space at any time between 4-7pm.

In the unlikely event that you turn up and we are at full capacity, there may be a short wait to enter.

Intra Protocol is an immersive audiovisual work blending cinema and performance. There will be low light levels and invigilators will be available to help to a seat if you need assistance.

Age Guidance

We recommend the minimum age for this installation is 12+. It features an evolving composition of light, sound and embodied space with themes and content more suitable for older children. The sound may become intense at times as the work unfolds, with some flashing lights.

Intra Protocol is a new iteration of a previous work and therefore currently in development. We aim to have access information available here from mid August.
