MONOM presents Acoustic Memories, an immersive spatial audio installation to explore the acoustic memory of extraction and the hidden infrastructures beneath Barnsley’s industrial landscape. Drawing on archival research, industrial histories, and the evolving ecologies that have emerged in their wake, the work forms a dense sonic composition that moves between hyperreal atmosphere and surreal abstraction.

The installation positions sound as a form of spatial archaeology, addressing the social histories and invisible infrastructures that continue to shape the region. Using the spatial capabilities of MONOM’s 4D sound system, the installation reveals a landscape shaped by larger forces while interweaving the resilience of the ecologies and communities that persist.

Blending memory, historical fragments, and abstract sonic experimentation, the work asks how sound can carry traces of labour, collective experience, and industrialisation across generations. In doing so, it reflects on the enduring presence of post/industry and how these forces continue to shape the societies that surround and uphold them.

Acoustic Memories by MONOM is commissioned and produced by Abandon Normal Devices (AND) for AND Festival 2026 with development and touring support from Full Of Noises. Supported using public funding through the National Lottery by Arts Council England, with further support from Barnsley Council.

How to experience Acoustic Memories

Acoustic Memories is free but booking is highly encouraged to guarantee entry. We recommend that you aim to arrive at Elsecar Heritage Centre 10 minutes before your slot to find the Ironworks building. In the event that you turn up without a ticket there may be a small number of walk-up tickets available or availability in the next slot.

Acoustic Memories is an immersive 4D spatial sound installation. There will be very low light levels and invigilators will be available to help you navigate the space.

Age Guidance

We recommend the minimum age for this installation is 12+. It features a commissioned 4D soundscape in a darkly lit space, designed as a durational, contemplative listening experience with themes and content more suitable for older children.

Access provisions

  • There will be ear defenders and ear plugs available from the entrance space.
  • There will be a mixture of seating options available, including low floor seating, and some backed chairs.
  • There will be a relaxed time slot each day for Acoustic Memories. There will be fewer people in the space at these times. More information and tickets for these slots will be available by mid August.

Acoustic Memories is a new commission and therefore currently in development. We aim to have additional access information available here from mid August.
